Yajnas (Fire Sacrifices)

According to the different material needs of the persons concerned, different types of yajnas are recommended in the Vedas (Scriptures) and by a Jyotishi (Astrologer). But ultimately all yajnas are meant for gradual promotion to the transcendental position. The Lord can be pleased by the performance of sacrifices; therefore, one who cannot perform them will find themself in scarcity.

Antyesti (Funeral Rites)

Anta literally means 'end', and eshti is 'wish, desire, seeking to go towards'. Antyeshti, or the funeral rites, is the last sanskara performed for an individual. It probably originated from the need to dispose off the body in a befittingly humane manner. This practical requirement later developed into a religious belief. It is believed that one conquers the earth through the sanskaras after birth and heaven through the sanskaras after death. Because of the belief in the existence of a soul, death signifies the end only of one birth, and preparations must be made for a safe journey to the next world. Food and other articles believed to be necessary on this journey are also provided to the dead.

Shraddha (Annual Memorial)

The Funeral Rites end with Shradha, which is first performed on the thirteenth day after death, then annually.

The main feature of the ceremony is the offering of pinda, or balls of cooked rice (pindadana), to one's ancestors. After a person's death, these rice balls are offered to him for 10 days, starting from the day of his death. It is believed that in this period, his soul is in the process of forming a body. The pindas provide nourishment at this time. After the tenth day, the soul is believed to have formed a body. It is then provided food for its journey to the next world. For this purpose, shradha is performed on any day from the eleventh to the thirtieth day after the death, usually on a large scale.
